Searching Family History

Searching family history - knowing and understanding where we came from – is part of what makes humans unique.  Have you ever wondered “How can I find my ancestors?” The fact that we can care about and appreciate those who came before us speaks to the higher intelligence and spiritual essence of man.

Genealogy, or the practice of searching family history, can begin with curiosity, evolve into a hobby, and eventually become an all-encompassing passion that will find you amazed and humbled by the life stories of your ancestors.
Once you score your first “find”, you’ll be hooked.  Searching family history is like putting the pieces of a puzzle together.  And finding the missing pieces is what the thrill of the hunt is all about.

Arming Yourself for the Hunt

This is what will make your search easier (and more fun!):
  1. Desire – we know you already have this or you wouldn’t be reading this now. ‘Desire’ is what will carry you through ‘dry periods’ when you’re looking for something you just can’t seem to find - that one elusive name, date or location.
  2.  Living family members- don't underestimate the knowledge that those just a few years older than you may have. If your parents, grandparents, or older relatives are still alive, let them know that you are searching family history and want their help. Record their voices or stories if you can. You will never regret it.
  3. Computer access-computers can save you hours, days and months of work.  Being able to do research online, keep in touch with relatives abroad; download or upload documents and pictures; create a database of family members; share information with others.  It all becomes easier with a computer.  If you don't own a computer, there is often free access at community libraries (and the librarians love to help people who are searching family history…)

Once you begin searching family history, a whole new world will open up to you. You'll wonder how you were ever satisfied with knowing less about yourself than what your searches will lead you to.
